What Is GSM in Fabric?

In simple terms, GSM defines how dense or thick the fabric feels:

  • Low GSM (50–150) → Lightweight fabrics such as T-shirts, linings, or summer wear.
  • Medium GSM (150–350) → Balanced fabrics like sportswear, hoodies, and uniforms.
  • High GSM (350+) → Heavy fabrics such as sweatshirts, outerwear, and upholstery.

GSM Formula (Manual Calculation)

GSM = (Weight in grams × 10,000) ÷ (Length × Width in cm)

Example:
If your fabric sample measures 20 cm × 25 cm and weighs 5 grams:
GSM = (5 × 10,000) ÷ (20 × 25) = 100 GSM
That means your fabric weighs 100 grams per square meter.
