Baseball in New York is the most popular sporting event, and the rivalry between the New York Mets and New York Yankees is legendary. These baseball teams still attract thousands of tourists from across the country, proving how powerful the sport is here. The Yankees are the most successful professional sports team, with 27 World Series titles and Famous players such as Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, and Joe DiMaggio.

NYC Basketball Teams

Basketball has a special bond with its fans in New York City. I’ve seen kids on courts where renowned players once learned to play, inspired to follow their dreams. Today, major NYC basketball teams like the New York Knicks stay in the spotlight. The Knickerbockers at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan attract 20,000 spectators, celebrities sitting courtside, and constant demand for Knicks tickets, which always sell out.

The Brooklyn Nets are another American pro sports team. Since being relocated from New Jersey in 2012, they have built a new identity in Brooklyn. Their rivalry with the Knicks is called the “Clash of the Boroughs,” a matchup I’ve attended myself—full of passion and noise.

NYC Football Teams

Football has always been popular, nearly as big as baseball in NYC, with its own intense rivalry. Both teams share MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The New York Giants, Founded in 1925, have won eight league championships and four Super Bowls. Giants games usually sell out, and tickets must be purchased early if you want a chance to watch.

The New York Jets also call MetLife home, and getting Jets tickets is often easier and sometimes comes at a discount. Whenever I’ve gone to see them play, I’ve found the vibe more relaxed but still full of energy, with seats more available than the Giants’.

Soccer has deep history in New York, with games played at Yankee Stadium, Red Bull Arena, and MetLife Stadium. The New York City FC, Founded in 2015, quickly grew into a respected NYCFC club, competing in MLS Eastern Conference battles. They host most home games at Yankee, but I’ve also seen their occasional matches at Citi Field or Red Bull Arena.

The Red Bulls are another professional soccer team from the metropolitan area, competing as members of the Eastern Conference in MLS. Based in New Jersey, they continue to play in a stadium filled with supporters waving flags and chanting nonstop.

NYC Hockey Teams

New York is one of the few states with multiple NHL teams and a dedicated fan base. The Islanders, from Elmont, call UBS Arena home, boasting four Stanley Cup titles and some of the most loyal supporters across Long Island.

The Rangers are the oldest and most iconic club in the NHL, with games at Madison Square Garden. Meanwhile, the Buffalo Sabres, Established in 1970, bring pride to the western part of the state, playing in the Atlantic Division at KeyBank Center in Buffalo.
